In 1989 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW was showcased the all-new and impressive 8-Series coupe. These days, the German model is celebrating the 25th anniversary and this is why, the Bavarian officials are taking a look back at their iconic coupe.
At the launch, the BMW 8-Series was described as the world's finest sports coupes with unique elegance and impressive performances. "The BMW 8-Series was designed to challenge to the world’s finest sports coupes with a design oozing avant-garde elegance, arresting performance attributes, an exceptional wealth of innovations and a sprinkling of exclusive luxury", is said in the official statement.
When the German model was launched, it features a 5.0 liter V12 engine rated at 300 horsepower and 450 Nm peak of torque. The 8-Series had 1.790 kilograms and the sprint from stand still to 100 km/h was done in 6.8 seconds.
In 1993, BMW introduced two new versions of the 8-Series. We are talking about the 840 Ci which had a 4.0 liter V8 engine with 286 horsepower and about the 850 CSi which had a 5.6 liter V12 unit rated at 381 horsepower and 550 Nm peak of torque.
In 1994, BMW made a downsizing decision, and they have replaced the 5.6 engine with a 5.4 unit rated at 326 HP.
In 1999, BMW ended the production of the 8-Series. The German manufacturer built a total of 30.621 units and more than two thirds of them were equipped with the V12 engine. Unfortunately, only one in six had a manual gearbox.
Happy birthday, BMW 8-Series! We wish you a wealthy comeback!
